We are looking for board members from diverse backgrounds who want to make an impact in a small, passionate, creative, and growing literary nonprofit.

We will consider anyone who is interested, but are also in need of the following areas of expertise:

  • Accounting

  • Law/Nonprofit Law

  • Finance

  • Construction and Development

  • Agriculture and/or Agritourism

  • Workshop and Event Design

  • Education and Educational Outreach

Position Title: Press Pause Press Board Member
Reports to: Executive Director/Board
Location: Jacksonville, NC (Remote participation available)
Time Commitment: 5-10 hours per month (meetings, committee work, and special events)

Organization Overview:

Press Pause Press is a nonprofit literary magazine and future creative retreat dedicated to fostering a community of writers, artists, and readers. Our mission is to provide a platform for diverse voices and cultivate meaningful connections through fiction, poetry, nonfiction, art, and music by providing an “away”, paused space to share and appreciate art, online, in print, and on the farm.

Position Overview:

Board members play a critical role in the strategic direction and governance of Press Pause Press. As a board member, you will provide leadership, oversight, and advocacy to help ensure we achieve our mission and reach our goals. This is an opportunity to support the arts, help nurture emerging artists and writers, and contribute to the growth of our nonprofit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Governance & Leadership:

    • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to ensure we meet our goals.

    • Attend quarterly board meetings and actively participate in discussions and decision-making.

    • Serve on at least one committee (e.g., finance, marketing, programming).

  • Fundraising & Advocacy:

    • Assist with fundraising efforts, including donor outreach, events, and grant writing.

    • Advocate for our mission in the community and help build partnerships.

  • Financial Oversight:

    • Help ensure the financial health and sustainability of Press Pause Press by reviewing budgets, financial reports, and fundraising plans.

    • Contribute to annual budgeting and long-term financial planning.

  • Event Participation:

    • Participate in and support major events, workshops, or retreats hosted by Press Pause Press.

    • Provide feedback and suggestions for new programs and initiatives.

  • Support Organizational Growth:

    • Offer expertise, connections, and ideas to help expand the impact and reach of Press Pause Press.

    • Engage with the writing and arts community to enhance programs and partnerships.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Passion for the arts, literature, and creativity.

  • Prior experience with nonprofit governance, fundraising, or community leadership (preferred but not required).

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Sustained openheartedness to possibility.

  • Ability to dedicate 5-10 hours per month to board responsibilities.

  • Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas: finance, legal, marketing, fundraising, workshop and event development, education, youth programming or general program development.
